Frontispiece photograph of a portrait bust of Mary Somerville. Light foxing to a few preliminary pages of text else fine. Inscribed (on a 4.5" square leaf from the original flyleaf, when the book was rebound it was tipped onto the original second front blank flyleaf) by publisher John Murray to Baroness Burdett-Coutts in the year of publication: "Baroness Burdett-Coutts, with John Murray's kind comp's Dec. 6/ '73". Also laid into the book is a one page Autograph Lletter Signed, from Murray to Baroness Burdett-Coutts on Murray's embossed letterhead to "Dear Baroness Coutts." The cordial letter begins: "I beg leave to ask your acceptance of a copy of Mary Somerville's Memoirs, a small volume w'ch I think will interest you. There are certain points in Mrs. S's character w'ch have a resemblance, as it seems to me, to your own. More especially in the amiable sympathy for animals- & in the efforts of both to protect them from wanton cruelty. with earnest hopes. [and] best wishes for your. health. I remain Dear Baroness Your devoted servant, John Murray." The letter is folded and housed in a small paper pocket, affixed to the second front flyleaf. Baroness Burdett-Coutts was a noted philanthropist. In 1837 she became the wealthiest woman in England). Her friend Charles Dickens dedicated his novel *The Life and Adventures of Martin Chuzzlewit* to her in 1844. The subject of the book, scientist Mary Fairfax Somerville was the daughter of Sir William George Fairfax. After the death of her first husband in 1807 she later married Dr. William Somerville, who encouraged her study of the physical sciences. An astronomer, mathematician, and geographer, she became the second woman admitted to the Royal Astronomical Society, along with Caroline Herschel, and was also admitted to the Royal Irish Academy in 1834). Her published works include *The Mechanism of the Heavens* (1831) and *On the Connexion of the Physical Sciences* (1834).
