Erstausgabe
First British edition and first printing. Hardcover. 214 pages. A very well received novel set in Hollywood. Didion and her husband, John Gregory Dunne, adapted the book into a movie of the same name that starred Anthony Perkins and Tuesday Weld. A tight very good plus copy with some slight bumping to the spine ends and in a very good plus dust jacket with some small edge tears, creasing to the flaps and other light wear. Still, a pleasing copy of this important early book from the author of classics like "The White Album" and the National Book Award winning "The Year of Magical Thinking".

Erstausgabe
First edition, first printing, of the author's second and best-selling novel. Didion's intention with the work was "to write a novel so elliptical and fast that it would be over before you noticed it, a novel so fast that it would scarcely exist on the page at all". The work "offers a gendered critique of the jet-setting Hollywood lifestyle" (Houston & Lombardi, p. 62) and was nominated for a National Book Award in the year of publication. The novel was the basis for the 1972 film of the same name, adapted by Didion and her husband John Gregory Dunne, starring Tuesday Weld. Joan Didion, "Why I Write", New York Times Magazine, 5 December 1976; Lynne Marie Houston & William V. Lombardi, Reading Joan Didion, 2009. Octavo. Original black and red cloth, spine lettered in gilt, front cover blocked in blind, black endpapers. With dust jacket. Spine slightly cocked and bumped; jacket price-clipped and lightly creased at extremities, else sharp: a near-fine copy in very good dust jacket.

First edition of Didion's third book. Octavo, original half cloth. Boldly signed by Joan Didion on the second endpaper. Fine in a very good price-clipped dust jacket. Jacket design by Janet Halverson. Photograph of the author by Julian Wasser. Designed by Guy Fleming. An exceptional example, uncommon signed. A ruthless dissection of American life in the late 1960s, Joan Didion's Play It as It Lays captures the mood of an entire generation, the ennui of contemporary society reflected in spare prose that blisters and haunts the reader. Set in a place beyond good and evil-literally in Hollywood, Las Vegas, and the barren wastes of the Mojave Desert, but figuratively in the landscape of an arid soul-it remains more than three decades after its original publication a profoundly disturbing novel, riveting in its exploration of a woman and a society in crisis and stunning in the still-startling intensity of its prose. Time magazine included the novel in its TIME 100 Best English-language Novels from 1923 to 2005. It was made into a 1972 movie starring Tuesday Weld as Maria and Anthony Perkins as BZ. Didion co-wrote the screenplay with her husband, John Gregory Dunne.
