Erstausgabe
Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Dedham, Massachusetts: H. Mann, 1811. VIII, [13] - [278], [1] - [214], [1] - 72 pp. 18.5 x 11 cm. Full calf covered boards with gilt ruling to spine and gilt tooling to spine label, all edges stained yellow with blue-green speckling; H. Mann's First Corrected Edition. Rubbing to boards and spine, with two small spots of insect damage to fore edge of front board. Some wear to corners, which are still surprisingly square. Previous owner's name and place (John Harvey / Nottingham / NH) in ink on front free endpaper, as well as on the verso of the title page. Toning throughout text, with some dampstaining to the first 74 pages. A few small closed tears (10 to 35 mm) to some pages. Binding nice and firm. A surprisingly nice copy. First published in 1719, Isaac Watts' book 'The Psalms of David Imitated in the Language of the New Testament' was a groundbreaking work. Until its publication, Christian congregations largely sung metrical psalms, or the Psalms of David translated in such a way as to follow English rhyme and hymnic meter. Instead of adhering to as much of the original wording as possible, Watts paraphrased the psalms through the language of Christianity. Although there are many editions of Watts' book, this particular edition was printed and also quite possibly bound by the 19th century American printer Herman Mann. Mann was a prolific printer, binder, papermaker, paper marbler, bookseller, and newspaper publisher, and was responsible for this "corrected" edition of Watts' work. . Hard Cover. Very Good.
