Erstausgabe
Leather. Zustand: Very Good. None (illustrator). First edition. The first edition of this very scarce collection of poetical works edited by noted antiquarian Thomas Wright. The first edition. Very scarce. Printed for The Roxburghe Club. The Roxburghe Club is an exclusive bibliophilic and publishing society, with notable members including Andrew Lang, Richard Heber and Henry Bradshaw. Thomas Wright was an English antiquarian and writer, who contributed to the Gentleman's Magazine and was a fellow of the Society of Antiquaries. Wright was a renowned scholar, who was perhaps best known for his editing of a number of relics of the Middle Ages. In this very scarce work, Wright edits a collection of poetical works, discovered in the library of the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford. Wright notes that the manuscript the work is based on contains a number of different handwriting styles, although the author or authors of the works are unknown. The work is an important and thorough work which brings to light a previously unknown manuscript. In a quarter morocco binding with paper covered boards. Externally generally smart with slight rubbing. A few light marks to the boards. Hinges slightly strained but firm. Slight offsetting to endpapers. Internally firmly bound. Pages generally bright and clean with marginal age toning and the odd spot, slightly heavier to the first and last few pages. Very Good. book.
