Leather. Zustand: Good Only. Not Stated (illustrator). A late 18th century work of literature for the improvement of reading and speaking. An 18th century work in a full calf binding. William Enfield (1741-1797) was a British Unitarian minister. This was his bestselling book, first published in 1774. He produced this work, an anthology of literary extracts intended to assist in practising elocution, for his Warrington pupils before publishing. It contains narrative, didactic, descriptive and argumentative pieces, orations, and dialogues, among other categories; to the front of the work is also an essay on elocution. In a full calf binding. Externally, rubbed to the boards and spine, with splitting to the joints and a split down the spine. Losses to the head and tail of the spine. Front board is detached. Rear hinge is tender but held by two cords. Lower corner to front board is delaminating. Binding is a little strained in one place but otherwise the pages are firmly bound. Lacking the half title page. Pages are age toned with the odd handling mark and spot, more concentrated to the first and last pages. Good Only. book.

Erstausgabe
Early edition (Speaker), first edition (Exercises), of these best-selling anthologies on elocution, recognized by the Monthly Review as "a valuable miscellany". In these works, William Enfield (1741-1797), a utilitarian minister and lecturer at Warrington's dissenting academy in Lancashire, collects extracts from classical and contemporary authors, including Shakespeare, Milton, Pope, and Cato, to serve as models for young readers. This edition of The Speaker is apparently unrecorded in ESTC, which identifies one octavo edition in 1774, with 376 pages. The present edition, by contrast, has 421. Alston VI 376; ESTC T71552. Monthly Review, or Literary Journal, vol. 52, 1775. Two volumes, octavo (200 x 122 mm). Contemporary tree calf, smooth spines with six compartments panelled and with floral decoration in gilt, red morocco label, covers bordered with single gilt fillet, marbled endpapers, edges sprinkled red. Engraved booklabel of William Leak (c.1796-1857) of the Poplars, Follifoot, on front pastedowns of both volumes. Gathering K bound after S (Exercises). Judicious restoration to spine ends, very light bumping and wear, slight browning and foxing to endpapers and outer leaves: a very attractive copy.

[Education] LEATHER-BOUND FIRST EDITION. Octavo (21 x 13cm), pp.[xxxii] 376. Brown full calf, upper board and spine rebound. Blind ruling to boards. Red label with gilt title to spine. Raised bands. Top edge green. Heavy toning to leaves, especially preliminaries and rear. Frequent light foxing, and a few annotations in black ink. Owner's inscribed name cut from corner of title page. Other inscription in black ink to flyleaf. Split front hinge. Toning to edges. Upper board slightly rubbed to joints and edges. Original lower board shows more signs of age, discolouration, and cracking. Overall, a very good preservation. The elocutionary movement of the eighteenth-century sought to make the art of speech a formal discipline in schools. This book, exemplary of the movement's wishes, comprises a collection of literary extracts paired with an essay on elocution.
