First Golden Cockerel Press edition, number 145 of 450 copies only, of this early example in English of the episodic picaresque novel. William Adlington's 1566 translation of this second-century text was likely the one available to Shakespeare, who used the story as a source for A Midsummer Night's Dream. Ransom 15. Octavo. Original cream cloth-backed pale blue boards, paper spine label, fore and bottom edges uncut. Running titles and initials printed in green. Two identical copies of publisher's prospectus laid in. Binding toned, damp stain at foot of spine, a little wear to extremities, foxing and offsetting to endpapers, contents clean. A very good copy.
