Rawls aims to express an essential part of the common core of the democratic tradition--justice as fairness--and to provide an alternative to utilitarianism, which had dominated the Anglo-Saxon tradition of political thought since the nineteenth century. Rawls substitutes the ideal of the social contract as a more satisfactory account of the basic rights and liberties of citizens as free and equal persons. "Each person," writes Rawls, "possesses an inviolability founded on justice that even the welfare of society as a whole cannot override." Advancing the ideas of Rousseau, Kant, Emerson, and Lincoln, Rawls's theory is as powerful today as it was when first published. [Book depository] l Belknap Press. Cambridge 1999. SEP, Wenar, "John Rawls". Slater 757. John Rawls was one of the best-known and most influential figures in political and moral philosophy in the later 20th and early 21st centuries. A Theory of Justice is the first book in which he laid out his theory of justice as fairness and is widely considered to be his magnum opus. In addition to being one of the landmark works in political philosophy, the book has been extraordinarily influential outside of academic philosophy, particularly in the legal community. Rawls work is clearly within the tradition of classic liberalism, but is filled with original and engaging arguments and has spawned a vast literature. A very attractive copy of this essential and justly renowned work in political philosophy. A small name on the front pastedown; jacket with light edge wear and mild sunning to its spine panel.

Cambridge, 1971. 8vo. Original full purple cloth with green lettering to spine, in the original green dust-jacket with purple lettering. A crease to the spine of both binding and dust-jacket, but otherwise just a bit of wear to extremities of dust-jacket and a few small tears to extremities as well. A very nice dust-jacket indeed. Internally fine and clean. XV, (1), 607 pp. First edition of this seminal classic, in which the "justice as fairness"-theory is presented for the first time. The work is now very difficult to come by in the first printing and especially difficult to find in a nice dust-jacket.John Rawls is considered one of the most influential political philosophers of the 20th century. "A Theory of Justice" is his first major work and the most influential of all of everything he wrote. He sets out to solve the problem of distributive justice and does so by applying a variant of the "social contract". The result is the famous theory of "justice as fairness", which is presented for the first time in this groundbreaking work. Rawls uses elements of Kantian as well utilitarian philosophy in order to describe a method for the moral evaluation of social and political institutions. The work evoked an immense interest in the philosophical and political world and received a flood of attention from all sorts of legal scholars, i.e. economists, political scientists, sociologists, philosophers, theologians etc. The important and lasting contributions Rawls has provided in this work have revived the study of political philosophy in academic circles, and he is probably the only political philosopher who is frequently cited by the court of law in America and by politicians in Great Britain.

First edition of the authorâs masterpiece. Octavo, original cloth. Signed by John Rawls on the front free endpaper. Near fine in an excellent dust jacket with some rubbing. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. Books signed by Rawls are rare. In his magisterial new work.John Rawls draws on the most subtle techniques of contemporary analytic philosophy to provide the social contract tradition with what is, from a philosophical point of view at least, the most formidable defense it has yet received.[and] makes available the powerful intellectual resources and the comprehensive approach that have so far eluded antiutilitarians. He also makes clear how wrong it was to claim, as so many were claiming only a few years back, that systematic moral and political philosophy are dead.Whatever else may be true it is surely true that we must develop a sterner and more fastidious sense of justice. In making his peerless contribution to political theory, John Rawls has made a unique contribution to this urgent task. No higher achievement is open to a scholar" (Marshall Cohen, New York Times Book Review). Listed by Modern Library as one of the greatest English-language nonfiction books of the 20th century.
