Sixth edition (first 1832) of this celebrated guide to beekeeping, providing an illustrated description of Nutt's collateral bee-boxes, which he claimed to have invented. The illustrations show the hive in use, with a central brood box, two side chambers, and one upper one. In another illustration, the hive is spread apart to show the communicating slots and the bell jar above full of comb honey. The middle drawer was used for feeding, and the outer "block fonts" were movable and "so contrived that ten thousand bees can with ease leave their prison and their sweets in the possession of the human apiarian, without the possible chance of a single intruder forcing its entrance to rob the magazine or to annoy the apiarian" (quoted in British Bee Books). Nutt lived as a boy in Wisbech, Cambridgeshire. He asserts that he invented his collateral hive before ever reading a book on bees, but there are two earlier descriptions of collateral boxes by S. White in 1756 and W. Dyer in 1781. British Bee Books 215. Octavo. Original green vertical-ribbed embossed cloth, spine lettered in gilt, cream coated endpapers. Folding frontispiece and plate, steel engravings in the text. Engraved armorial bookplate on front pastedown, newspaper clipping (a statement on bees from the Quarterly Review) on rear pastedown, manuscript notes in ink on quantities of honey obtained from a hive in Chevening in 1849 on rear free endpaper. Spine ends bumped, cloth presenting very nicely, contents generally crisp and clean: a very good copy.

B is for Brushmaker Engraved trade card. John Grant was active at premises beside London Bridge from 1851 to 1859, after which point he moved to Leadenhall Street, keeping his recognisable sign of the Four Brushes. At his shop, Grant produced and sold various domestic items, specialising in brushes and brooms. Despite seeming rather mundane objects, an immense amount of time and skill went into creating brushes before the invention of industrial glue. Made by passing bunches of bristles though small holes and then binding them with wire, brushmaking was a consuming task in Grant's day, with a single hairbrush taking around one day to "draw". Grant's trade card is surmounted by an illustration of his shop sign, with the copious text beneath surrounded by an ornate framework made up of decorative motifs and the tools of the trade. The text establishes Grant's authority in the realm of brushmaking by describing him as "late partner with Mr John Thomas deceas'd, Son of the late Mrs Ann Pitham" and assuring potential customers that Grant continues to operate "in the cheapest and best Manner, as in Mr. Pitham's time". Although little evidence of their businesses remains, it is clear that Ann Pitham and her son must have been well-establishes brushmakers themselves. Grant's card also advertises the availability of "Bees Wax, Hogs Hair & Horse Hair" and "all sorts of Goods in the Turnery Way" at the Four Brushes. BM Heal,24.7.
