Erstausgabe
Hardcover. Zustand: Good. First Edition. 247 p. 19 cm. Brown pebbled cloth with blank impressing. Corners worn and edges dented, some tiny chips and tears to spine ends. Former owner's label and and ink stamp on front pastedown. Most of Schaeffer's travels take place in various gold fields, where he experiences California gold fever, life at the mines in winter, journeys through the mountains, experiences in Nevada and Mexico, and an Indian pow wow. But he also describes shipboard life and various places where he made shore excursions, such as Rio de Janeiro and Acapulco. His description of San Francisco in 1849-50 is also colourful: "With the exception of a few old stone and adobe houses, the town seemed to contain nothing but tents and boarded houses . Let us enter the blue tent on the corner, known as the El Dorado Saloon. Around the several tables are seated gamblers surounded by all kinds of adventurers. - The Mexican, American, Native Californian, English, Dutch, French, Irish, &c. &c., clad in varied habiliments" (p. 27). Sabin 77485, Cowan p. 570.

Erstausgabe
First edition. 12mo. Original decorative blind-stamped cloth, rebacked, old spine expertly laid down, discreet booksellers stamp beneath imprint, small library cancellation stamp on recto of title, otherwise a very attractive copy. [vi], 247pp. New York, ?The excitement attending the first discovery of gold in California was intense as it was universal.? A somewhat misleading title since over two thirds of Schaeffer's narrative concentrates on his experiences in California, which he set out for early in 1849 from New York, one of many ?tempted by the almost fabulous tales of fortunes acquired as if by magic? En route he passed through Rio de Janeiro and Valparaiso, passing through the Golden Gate on the morning of 17th September, 1849, after some six months in the ship Flavius. Schaeffer set out for the mines almost immediately and his narrative provides a good account of the life of the 49er, and San Francisco where he found that the ?general state of society was loose? Sabin, 77485.
