Sonnini was a French naturalist, writing one-hundred and seventy-two volumes of 'Histoire Naturelle' over his career.Translated from French to English by Henry Hunter, a Scottish minister known for his translations of Leonard Euler and Johann Kaspar Lavater.In the armorial binding of Sir William O'Malley, with the O'Malley crest family bookplate to the front paste down. In a full marbled calf binding, rebacked with the original boards and spine restored. Light rubbing to the original calf, with a patch of loss to the rear board. Minor surface cracks to the spine. Light bumping to the extremities. Very small chip and closed tear to the spine label. Bookplate to the front paste down. Blind stamp to the rear endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are lightly age-toned with some scattered spots, including to the endpapers. Tidemark to the frontispiece and to the plates. Fainter tide mark and light spots to the cloth-backed folding map. Good. book.

Small repair to the head of the title page. Prior owner's stamp to leaf i. Small closed tear to plate VI, with no loss. Spots to the folding map and plates. Very Good. book.

Contemporary calf, rebacked preserving the old spine. First English 4to edition. Sonnini (1751-1812) was a French natural historian and traveller. "Sonnini set out with baron de Tott's expedition in 1777. On arrival at Alexandria he found orders to explore Egypt from Louis XVI awaiting him. This he proceded to do, going on to Turkey, Greece, Crete and the Archipelago. He returned to Manoncourt in 1780 where he cultivated many new vegatables and herbs, his interest in natural history is evident from the number of plates in the above work showing plants and fish; indeed Sonnini collaborated with Buffon on an edition of the latter's works. Translated from the French by Henry Hunter. Contains folding map of Egypt called Missir (28 1/2 x 18 1/2"). Sonnini was a French naturalist known for his 127 volumes "Histoire naturelle." Intending to collect rare Egyptian birds he set out with Baron de Tott's expedition in 1777. On arrival in Alexandria he found orders to explore Egypt from Louis XVI awaiting him. Contains four tables with meteorological observations made at Rosetta during November and December 1777, and February 1778. Contains 17 pages of advertisements for books printed for John Stockdale, and list of subscribers at rear. Bindings with wear along edges, small chips and bumps at corners. Joints partially cracked, boards rubbed. Bookplates, dealer stickers and stamps on inside front covers. Wormholes at lower left corner of last few pages in volume one. Bindings in overall good-, interiors in very good condition.
