Seven volumes, small 8vo, contemporary calf, gilt, spines gilt, red morocco labels (spines rubbed, two labels neatly renewed). The set consists of: (i) The works of Alexander Pope, Esq; Vol. I. Part I. London: printed for H. Lintot, 1740. 8vo, pp. xxxix, [i], [19]-198; including an engraved frontispiece portrait. A reprint of the edition published by Lintot in 1736. Griffith 510. (ii) The works of Alexander Pope, Esq; Vol. II. Part I. Containing his epistles, &c. London: printed for R. Dodsley, and sold by T. Cooper, 1740. 8vo, pp. [viii], 62, [2], [4], [65]-180, [1]. The arrangement of this volume has been substantially altered from what is found in the edition of 1739, as is explained by a note on the final leaf: 'NB. Those Satires and Epistles of Horace, with the Satires of Dr. Donne, hitherto printed in this Volume, are in this new Edition placed at the beginning of the Second Part, in their proper Order with others of the same kind by the Author, which compleat his Poetical Works'. In addition, the final section has been expanded to include epitaphs on Isaac Newton, James Craggs, and the Duke of Buckingham, along with several epigrams and short poems. There is also a four-page table of contents for the four moral epistles (to Cobham, etc.); Griffith describes this as misbound at the front of the volume, but in this copy it has been placed correctly. Griffith 523. (iii) The works of Alexander Pope Esq; Vol. III. Consisting of fables, translations, and imitations. London: printed for H. Lintot, 1736. 8vo, pp. vii, [i], 198, [2] advertisements. The second of two very similar printings of 1736, from completely different settings of type. In this edition the 'a' of 'imitations' on the title page falls directly under the 't' in 'translations' in the line above; in the first printing it is slightly to the left. Griffith 418. (iv) The works of Alexander Pope, Esq; Vol. IV. Containing the Dunciad, with the prolegomena of Scriblerus, and notes variorum. London: printed for L. Gilliver and J. Clarke, 1736. 8vo, pp. 256, 256-258. The second of two very similar editions of 1736, from different settings of type. In this edition there is no comma after Gilliver's name in the imprint. Griffith 432. (v-vi) The works of Alexander Pope, Esq; Vol V. Containing an authentic edition of his letters. London: printed for T. Cooper, 1739. 8vo, pp. [ii], ii, [xxviii], 240. [with:] The works of Alexander Pope, Esq; Vol. VI. Containing the second part of his letters. London: printed for T. Cooper, 1739. 8vo, pp. [xvi], 151, [1], 145-236. Largely a reprint of the 'second edition' of 1737, but with additions in the second volume: (a) two letters from Atterbury, on an inserted half-sheet (pp. 145-151); (b) two letters to Jonathan Richardson (nos. XLII and XLIV, pp. 225-8). These volumes were sufficiently popular that they were reprinted page for page later the same year: the reprint can be quickly identified by the presence of a period after 'Vol' in 'Vol. V.' Griffith 511. (vii) The works of Alexander Pope, Esq; Vol. II. Part II. Containing imitations of Horace and Dr. Donne. London: printed for R. Dodsley, and sold by T. Cooper, 1740. 8vo, pp. 32, [2], [23]-187, [1]. The arrangement of the poems in this edition, along with that of Part I, above, was done according to Pope's wishes; he had written to Spence, as noted by Griffith, 'My works are now well laid out'. The volume now begins with nine imitations of Horace, followed by two satires after Donne. At the end is 'Epilogue to the Satires: Written in 1738', in two dialogues; in the editions of this volume printed in 1738, these poems had appeared at the front, entitled simply 'One Thousand Seven Hundred and Thirty Eight'. On the last page is a list of errata for Parts I and II. Griffith 524.

POPE, Alexander. THE WORKS OF ALEXANDER POPE, ESQ; IN SIX VOLUMES, COMPLETE. With his last corrections, additions, and improvements; together with all his notes. London: [s.n.], 1772. Twelve engraved plates (numbered I-XII) in volumes 1-3. The first plate, the frontispiece to Volume 1, is a portrait of Pope. There are no plates in volumes 4-6. There is a general title-page for the set in Volume 1 only that is followed by a special title-page; all other volumes only have special title-pages, too. These indicate the volume number and content of each volume: 1. Juvenile poems, translations and imitations; 2. Satires, Essay on man, Moral essays, and miscellaneous pieces in verse; 3. The Dunciad; 4. All his miscellanies in prose, and part of his letters; 5. Letters to and from Mr. Pope; 6. The last of his letters, and will. This set is complete as issued, but it does not include Pope's translations of Homer. Six 12mo. volumes, 16.5 x 9.8 cm., in attractive, contemporary, full leather bindings with gilt-decorated spines in six compartments, each with a red morocco title label. Bindings show some occasional, light, superficial wear, and boards are slightly bowed. Specifically, the lower joint of volume 2 is just starting, and volumes 4 and 5 each have a small nick at the heel. Nevertheless, the volumes are all sound and in very good condition overall, and make an attractive set. The text is quite clean and very good despite some closed tears in a few volumes. A handsome eighteenth-century set in very good condition. (ESTC 5454).

Nine volumes, octavo, engraved frontispiece; early half blue straight-grained morocco and marbled boards, a handsome set. A handsome eighteenth century edition of the complete works of the poet and satirist Alexander Pope, containing the pivotal analysis An Essay on Man. Widely read and distributed across the Continent, the Essay elicited a response from Voltaire (La Loi Naturelle of 1756). However, not all criticism was positive, and Pope - a gentleman of sensitive disposition - was crushed by the demolition penned by Swiss professor Jean-Pierre de Crousaz. Not until his Works were first published in 1735 did Pope firmly claim authorship of the work, commenting "if I could flatter myself that this Essay has any merit, it is in steering betwixt the extremes of doctrines seemingly opposite, in passing over terms utterly unintelligible, and in forming a temperate yet not inconsistent, and a short yet not imperfect system of Ethics'. . Bindings rubbed, preliminaries browned and offset.
