Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. In October 2015, metal detectorist James Mather discovered an important Viking hoard near Watlington in South Oxfordshire. The hoard dates from the end of the 870s, a key moment in the struggle between Anglo-Saxons and Vikings for control of southern England. The Watlington hoard is a significant new source of information on that struggle, throwing new light not only on the conflict between Anglo-Saxon and Viking, but also on the changing relationship between the two great Anglo-Saxon kingdoms of Mercia and Wessex. This was to lead to the formation of a single united kingdom of England only a few years later. The hoard contains a mixture of Anglo-Saxon coins and Viking silver, and is in many ways a typical Viking hoard. However, its significance comes from the fact that it contains so many examples of previously rare coins belonging to Alfred the Great, king of Wessex (871-99) and his less well-known contemporary Ceolwulf II of Mercia (874-c.879). These coins provide a clearer understanding of the relationship between Alfred and Ceolwulf, and perhaps also of how the once great kingdom of Mercia came to be absorbed into the emerging kingdom of England by Alfred and his successors. A major fundraising campaign is being planned by the Ashmolean to secure this collection for the museum. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. This book illustrates the full range of Camille Pissarro's work from the 1850's through to one of his last pictures, painted from his window in Le Havre in 1903 - Quai au Havre. A close friend of Cezanne and Monet, he was the only member of the group to exhibit in all eight Impressionist exhibitions between 1874-86. His eldest son, Lucien (1863-1944), settled in England in 1890 and became a founder member of the Camden Town Group. Also a wood engraver, he founded the Eragny Press named after his parents' village in France. This book also touches on the work of Lucien's younger brothers - Georges, Felix, Ludovic-Rudolphe and Paul-Emile, and of Lucien's daughter Orovida (1893-1968) who developed her own individual style as an etcher and painter, and, with her mother, presented Lucien's collection of family works to the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. Luke Herrman, a leading authority on the life and work of Turner, sets the Ashmolean's collections within the context of the artist's life and particularly his relationship with Ruskin. The Turner collection in the Ashmolean Museum is the finest and most representative of his watercolours and drawings outside London, including work from all periods of his life providing a broad survey of his development as a draughtsman. It includes ten watercolours commissioned from the young Turner to be engraved for the Oxford Almanack between 1799 and 1810, and a representative selection of sketches and finished works, over 70 of which were given to the University of Oxford by the artist's friend and champion, John Ruskin, among them 23 watercolours from the celebrated series, The Rivers of France. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Buch
Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. The Ashmolean Museum in Oxford possesses one of the best collections, outside Russia, of panoramic prints of St Petersburg, made between 1716 and 1835, recording the growth of the city from its foundation in 1703 on the banks of the Neva to its emergence in the early 19th century as one of the most beautiful cityscapes in Europe. The collection includes the wonderful series of 16 hand-coloured views made by the Swedish artist, Benamin Paterssen. This text gives an account of the history of Russia through a period of exceptional turbulance during which successive rulers gave visible expression to their political ambitions by adding spectacular buildings to the skyline of St Petersburg and by commissioning prints of exceptional beauty to commemorate their enterprises. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.
