The Ascension of Authorship also examines the Greek scholarly methodology that questioned traditional connections between names and texts, a methodology perfected by Hellenistic grammarians and inherited by early Christian scholars. Wyrick argues that the fusion of Jewish and Hellenistic approaches toward attribution helped lead to St. Augustine s reinvention of the writer of scripture as an author whose texts were governed by both divine will and human intent. / CONTENTS Preface A Note on Translations and Transliterations Introduction Chapter 1 The Scribes of the Hebrew Bible Chapter 2 Attaching Names to Biblical Books Chapter 3 The Jewish Critique of Greek Letters Chapter 4 Biblical and Homeric Textualization According to Josephus Chapter 5 Peisistratus and Ptolemy Chapter 6 Aristotle and Ezra Chapter 7 From Canon to Authorship Conclusion Notes Bibliography Index. Every history of the period includes some mention of festivals, although most historians have been content either to ridicule them as ineffectual or to bemoan them as repugnant examples of a sterile, official culture. Mona Ozouf shows us that they were much more than bizarre marginalia to the revolutionary process. Festivals offer critical insights into the meaning of the French Revolution; they show a society in the process of creating itself anew. / Contents Foreword by Lynn Hunt The Republican Calendar Brief Chronology of the French Revolution Introduction I The History of the Revolutionary Festival The Revolution as Festival History of the Festivals, History of the Sects Boredom and Disgust II The Festival of the Federation: Model and Reality Riot and Festival: The "Wild" Federations The Federative Festivals The Paris Federation A New Festival? Aus der Bibliothek von Prof. Wolfgang Haase, langjährigem Herausgeber der ANRW und des International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT) / From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Schutzumschlag leicht berieben, sonst sehr gut und sauber / dust jacket slightly rubbed, otherwise very good and clean. - When Rome was at its height, an emperor s male beloved, victim of an untimely death, would be worshipped around the empire as a god. In this same society, the routine sexual exploitation of poor and enslaved women was abetted by public institutions. Four centuries later, a Roman emperor commanded the mutilation of men caught in same-sex affairs, even as he affirmed the moral dignity of women without any civic claim to honor. The gradual transformation of the Roman world from polytheistic to Christian marks one of the most sweeping ideological changes of premodern histoiy. At the center of it all was sex. Exploring sources in literature, philosophy, and art, Kyle Harper examines the rise of Christianity as a turning point in the history of sexuality and helps us see how the roots of modern sexuality are grounded in an ancient religious revolution. While Roman sexual culture was frankly and freely erotic, it was not completely unmoored from constraint. Offending against sexual morality was cause for shame, experienced through social condemnation. The rise of Christianity fundamentally changed the ethics of sexual behavior. In matters of morality, divine judgment transcended that of mere mortals, and shame a social concept gave way to the theological notion of sin. This transformed understanding led to Christianity s explicit prohibitions of homosexuality, extramarital love, and prostitution. Most profound, however, was the emergence of the idea of free will in Christian dogma, which made all human action, including sexual behavior, accountable to the spiritual, not the physical, world. / Contents Introduction From City to Cosmos 1 The Moralities of Sex in the Roman Empire 2 The Will and the World in Early Christian Sexuality 3 Church, Society, and Sex in the Age of Triumph 4 Revolutionizing Romance in the Late Classical World Conclusion Sex and the Twilight of Antiquity Abbreviations Notes Acknowledgments Index. - Schutzumschlag weist leichte Randläsuren auf, Schutzumschlag etwas berieben, sonst sehr guter Zustand / dust jacket has slight edge wear, dust jacket a bit rubbed, otherwise very good condition. - In the wake of the 1572 revolt against Spain, the new Dutch Republic outlawed Catholic worship and secularized all church property. Calvinism prevailed as the public faith, yet Catholicism experienced a resurgence in the first half of the seventeenth century, with the number of adherents rivaling that of the Calvinist church. In a wide-ranging analysis of a marginalized yet vibrant religious minority, Charles Parker examines this remarkable revival. It had little to do with the traditional Dutch reputation for tolerance. A keen sense of persecution, combined with a vigorous program of reform, shaped a movement that imparted meaning to Catholics in a Protestant republic. A pastoral organization known as the Holland Mission emerged to establish a vigorous Catholic presence. A chronic shortage of priests enabled laymen and laywomen to exercise an exceptional degree of leadership in local congregations. Increased interaction between clergy and laity reveals a picture that differs sharply from the standard account of the Counter-Reformation s clerical dominance and imposition of church reform on a reluctant populace. There were few places in early modern Europe where a proscribed religious minority was so successful in remaining a permanent fixture of society. Faith on the Margins sheds new light on the relationship between religious minorities and hostile environments. / CONTENTS Preface Map Introduction 1 Caught between Reformations: Catholics in the Holland Mission 2 Training the Laborers: Formation of the Dutch Clergy 3 Laboring in the Vineyard: Priests and Pastoral Care 4 Restoring a Catholic Presence: Lay Attitudes and Initiatives 5 Paying the Priest, Feeding the Poor: Patronage and Poor Relief Conclusion Appendix: Endowments to Collegium Pulcheria from the Liber Fundationum Abbreviations Notes Bibliography Index. Hardcover. Zustand: Sehr gut. Schutzumschlag. Erste Ausgabe. xv, 313 S., 3 Blatt. Orig.-Leinenband mit Schutzumschlag. "In 1914, Nakae Ushikichi (1889-1942), gifted son of the famous Nakae Ch?min (1847-1901) and graduate of Tokyo University's Faculty of Law, left behind the opportunities open to him in Japan and went to China. He worked briefly for the South Manchurian Railway and then in the Yüan Shih-k'ai government, but a personal crisis in 1919 turned him suddenly to a life of rigorous scholarship and social criticism. He spent most of his adult life in Peking, published little, deeply influenced a few key compatriots, and became a posthumous hero to a generation of postwar Japanese intellectuals. In the first full-length study in English of the life and thought of Nakae Ushikichi, Joshua A. Fogel tells the strange story of this cocky, indolent carouser who became a disciplined scholar and passionate advocate of the worth of all humanity. Fogel examines Nakae's Sinological work in the context of his wide reading in German philosophy, Western historiography, and classical Chinese sources. He also translates Nakae's wartime diary" (Publisher's description). Mit kleinem chinesischem Stempel, sonst schönes, gut erhaltenes Exemplar mit nur leichten Gebrauchsspuren.
