Includes some material from the author's earlier book "Stalking the Elephant Kings: Inn Seach of Laos" (1997). "Twenty years after the Indochina wars, Christopher Kremmer visited Laos - at the crossroads of change in Southeast Asia. He started his journey in the tranquillity of Luang Prabang, once the royal capital. But despite its ancient culture and stately airs, the town - like Laos itself - is a place of secrets, mysteries and nagging questions. Setting off in search of the lost royal family, a 600-year-old dynasty consumed by the violent troubles of the 1960s and 1970s, the author reveals a small land-locked corner of Asia struggling to come to terms with the legacies of the American war and Asian communism. this is travel with a mission and it takes the autor deep into Laos - to the bomb craters and enigmatic stone containers of the Plain of Jars, the brooding caves and limestone peaks of Houaphan near the Lao border with Vietnam, and the southern provinces bordering Cambodia.".

1st English language edition. Translated by Mabel Lee. xi + 510pp + [6]pp, appendix, paperback. Signed by the translator Mabel Lee on the title page. Remainder mark lower edge, upper edge very lightly browned. Very good copy. First published under the title ?? (Lingshan) in Taiwan in 1990 it was not until 10 years later that this important novel was published in English. This is a copy of the very scarce world first English language edition published in Sydney. It was due to the influence of the translator, Australian scholar, Mabel Lee, held with HarperCollins Australia that Soul Mountain was published in English, albeit in a very small print run. Very shortly after it was published in Australia Gao Xingjian won the Nobel Prize for Literature after which Soul Mountain was published in much larger print runs throughout the world. Scarce first edition of this important novel.
