Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. _ The author is a sympathetic narrator and he has told his story with genuine verve and style [His] South Tyrolean origins, and his role in the Brandenburg Division make the book very distinctive._' Roger Moorhouse. The Brandenburgers were Hitler's Special Forces, a band of mainly foreign German nationals who used disguise and fluency in other languages to complete daring missions into enemy territory. Overshadowed by stories of their Allied equivalents, their history has largely been ignored, making this memoir all the more extraordinary. First published in German in 1984, de Giampietro's highly-personal and eloquent memoir is a vivid account of his experiences. In astonishing detail, he delves into the reality of life in the unit from everyday concerns and politics to training and involvement in Brandenburg missions. He details the often foolhardy missions undertaken under the command of Theodor von Hippel including the June 1941 seizure of the Duna bridges in Dunaburg and the attempted capture of the bridge at Bataisk where half of his unit were killed. Translated into English for the first time, this is a unique insight into a fascinating slice of German wartime history, both as an account of the Brandenburgers and within the very particular context of the author's South Tyrolean origins. Given the very perilous nature of their missions very few of these specially-trained soldiers survived the Second World War and much knowledge of the unit has been lost forever. Widely regarded as the predecessor of today's special forces units, this fascinating account brings to life the Brandenburger Division and its part in history in vivid and compelling detail. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. When you're fighting for your life with a fifty-fifty chance you've got to enjoy it. Know what I mean? From 1963 to 1966 Britain successfully waged a secret war to keep the Federation of Malaya free from domination by Soekarno's Indonesia and by Chinese Communists. At the forefront of the campaign was the SAS, an elite branch of the British army whose essence is secrecy and whose tools are bold initiative, surprise and skill. Working in four man patrols, the SAS teams first befriended the head-hunting border tribes and even trained some of them as an irregular militia force. As the conflict continued, SAS teams went beyond the borders into Indonesia where they tracked down enemy camps, destroyed supply routes and attacked the soldiers in the riverboats. By talking to those who were there, Peter Dickens has recreated what it was really like to fight in the dense jungle and rainforest of Malaysia. In telling this dramatic story, he captures the bravery and relentless pursuit of excellence that make the SAS the elite and prestigous unit it is. Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. Real history with the narrative grip of the best fiction. The best background to the sea fiction of C S Forester, Alexander Kent and Patrick O'Brian. Specially commissioned cover painting by Geoff Hunt. This is a gripping account of how the men of Nelson's navy lived and fought, written by the author of the ever-popular Ramage sagas. Based on years of research and reading in contemporary sources, it brings alive, in a way that few other books have done, naval shipboard life during the Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars. Every aspect is covered: the Navy's ships and their weapons, the daily routine of officers and men, the harsh discipline and punishments, the Press Gang, the threat of disease and how the Navy sought to combat it, and the ever-present lure of prize money. It describes how the men who won the battles of Cape St Vincent, the Nile and Trafalgar lived their daily lives, and how in spite of all the hardships they faced, they dominated the seas so completely throughout the Napoleonic Wars. This highly readable book will delight and enlighten all those who seek a vivid yet accurate account of life in the Navy of Nelson's era. DUDLEY POPE served in the Second World War as a cadet in the Merchant Navy until wounded in the Battle of the Atlantic. During seventeen years in Fleet Street as a naval correspondent he began his career as an historian and in 1959 he resigned to become a full-time writer. In 1965 he set sail for the West Indies, where he and his wife lived and cruised until his death in 1997. His other non-fiction books include the best-selling England Expects and Flag 4, both available from Chatham. SEVENTH REPRINT OF THIS EDITION. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. Gunter Koschorrek wrote his illicit diary on any scraps of paper he could lay his hands on, storing them with his mother on infrequent trips home on leave. The diary went missing, and it was not until he was reunited with his daughter in America some forty years later that it came to light and became Blood Red Snow. The author's excitement at the first encounter with the enemy in the Russian Steppe is obvious. Later, the horror and confusion of fighting in the streets of Stalingrad are brought to life by his descriptions of the others in his unit - their differing manners and techniques for dealing with the squalor and death. He is also posted to Romania and Italy, assignments he remembers fondly compared to his time on the Eastern Front. This book stands as a memorial to the huge numbers on both sides who did not survive and is, some six decades later, the fulfilment of a responsibility the author feels to honour the memory of those who perished. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. Gunther Koschorrek wrote his illicit diary on any scraps of paper he could lay his hands on. As keeping a diary was strictly forbidden, he sewed the pages into the lining of his thick winter coat and deposited them with his mother on infrequent trips home on leave. The diary went missing and it was when he was reunited with his daughter in America some forty years later that it came to light and became Blood Red Snow. The author was a keen recruit at initial training and his excitement at the first encounter with the enemy in the Russian Steppe is obvious. The horror and confusion of fighting in the streets of Stalingrad are brought to life by his descriptions of the others in his unit; their differing manners and techniques for dealing with the squalor and death. He is also posted to Romania and Italy, assignments he remembers fondly compared to his time on the Eastern Front. This harrowing book takes the reader to the front line and paints a very human picture of what life was like under relentless Russian attacks in freezing conditions. As Koschorrek says in his introduction, the book stands as a memorial to the huge numbers on both sides who did not survive and is, over five decades later, the fulfillment of a responsibility he feels to honour the memory of those who perished. Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. 'A brilliant first-hand account of the life of a fighter pilot' - The Spectator The dramatic memoir of a WWII Spitfire pilot Recounts in close detail the thrill and horror of aerial combat during the Battle of Britain Written by an airman of the famed 609 Squadron Spitfire Pilot is the exhilarating and moving memoir of D. M. Crook, an airman in the legendary 609 Squadron - one of the most successful RAF units in the Battle of Britain.Beginning with his fond recollections of his halcyon days in training - acrobatics, night flying and languorous days spent playing sport and nights off visiting Piccadilly Circus - Crook goes on to recount in thrilling detail the dogfights, remarkable victories and tragic losses which formed the daily routine of Britain's heroic aerial defenders in that long summer of 1940. Often hopelessly outnumbered, the men of 609 Squadron in their state-of-the-art Spitfires committed acts of unimaginable bravery against the Messerschmitts and Junkers of Germany's formidable Luftwaffe. Many of Crook's fellow airmen did not make it back alive, and the absence they leave in the close-knit community of the squadron is described with great poignancy.Spitfire Pilot offers a unique and personal insight into one of the most critical moments of British history, when a handful of men stood up against the might of the German Air Force in defence of their country. This new edition, the first for more than sixty years, includes a new foreword by David Crook's daughter and Air Vice Marshal Sandy Hunter, Honorary Air Commodore of the 609 Squadron. The book also has an introduction by Professor Richard Overy, who has published extensively on the history of World War II. His books include The Air War, 1939-1945 and Dictators. Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. Based on their experiences during the First World War, the Reichswehr decided that the infantry support gun of the future should be an armoured, motorized vehicle with an effective calibre of cannon: the Sturmgeschutz III. The weapon was used in the 'fire brigade role' at hotspots along the Front, where it was much feared by enemy forces. This illustrated volume tells the tale of Brigade 191, aka the 'Buffalo Brigade', who used the Sturmgeschutz III as they took part in Operation Barbarossa in the Ukraine, saw action during the fight for Greece in 1941 and were deployed to the areas of heaviest fighting in the campaign against the Soviet Union. This began with the infantry advance from Ukraine to Moscow (1941): then to Voronezh, Kursk, the Caucasus and Kuban (1942), then the Kertsch Peninsula and the Crimea (1943-1944), before they were finally evacuated from Sevastopol into Romania by naval lighters. On the South-east Front (the retreat through the Balkans), the Brigade fought its way into Austria and was still fighting on the last day of the war to keep a corridor open. Keen to write an account recording the tactical significance of the Sturmgeschutz III, while surviving members of Brigade 191 also wished for a cohesive documentary record of the war, Bork set about gathering military records and literature, as well as interviewing as many ex-Brigade men as possible, in order to bring this detailed account into being. Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. The Second World War was the first in which amphibious landings played a truly significant part in the outcome of a global conflict and in this work, drawing on the testimonies of hundreds of participants, the author recounts the experiences of those who partook in all the allied amphibious landings during World War II, and in doing so describes some of the most significant battles of the war. The book is structured broadly chronologically and is divided into two: the first half deals with the European theatre and covers, amongst other landings, Salerno, the Dieppe raid, and the D-Day landing in Normandy; the second half focuses on the Pacific and Guadal canal, Iwo Jima and Okinawa are some of the landings which are covered in detail. Every aspect of amphibious warfare is described and the experiences of the planners, the landing craft crew, the crews of the support ships, the assault troops, technicians, the air crews who provided support, and the follow-up troops and replacements are all told. Literally hundreds of testimonies were taken by the author in the preparation of this book and the resulting work aims to describe the realities and horrors of war as well as the humour and comradeship, and the technical and logistical factors which influenced the allied experience of amphibious warfare. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. The story of the Royal Naval Commandos in World War II Contains a wealth of first-hand accounts Foreword by Man and Boy author Tony Parsons The Royal Naval Commandos had one of the most dangerous and important tasks of any unit in World War II - they were first onto the invasion beaches and they were the last to leave. Formed in 1941 as the Royal Naval Beach Parties, many lost their lives in the Dieppe raid. Organised into units from A Commando to the all-Canadian W Commando, after Dieppe they became fully fledged fighting Commandos with their legendary Fairbairn Sykes knives. Under their officers who were designated Beachmasters, the Royal Naval Commandos led the way in on the beaches as part of the Allied landings in Madagascar, North Africa, Pantelleria, Sicily, Salerno, the Volturno River, Anzio, Arakan, Normandy, Elba, Walcheren and Commachio. Their work on the beaches was crucial to the success of the Allied invasions. The story of the Commandos covers their beginnings early in the war and their training, both at their base, HMS Armadillo at Ardentinny in Scotland, and the famous Achnacarry Commando training school, to the invasions they spearheaded. After the war the Royal Naval Commandos were disbanded and their wartime role was given to the Royal Marines. The personal accounts of the Commandos contained in this book will ensure that their legacy is not forgotten. Beachhead Assault includes a foreword by Man and Boy author Tony Parsons, whose father was a Royal Naval Commando who fought at Elba. As he writes, 'Every page of this book is covered with tales of an almost suicidal courage.' It also contains a preface by Ken Oakley, Chairman of the Royal Naval Commando Association. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Zustand: Good. As the Allies made their inexorable last assault upon Germany in 1945, Adolf Hitler, the supreme commander-in-chief of all German armed forces, ordered that every official military document should be destroyed. Admiral Karl Donitz, then supreme commander-in-chief of the Navy, felt differently. The Navy, he believed, had waged an honourable war, and posterity would prove the fairest judge. Accordingly, the records fell into Allied hands. Were it not for Donitz's singular decision, this remarkable book would not exist. Fuehrer Conferences on Naval Affairs, 1939-1945 is the faithful, first-hand account of Hitler's meetings with his Navy commander-in-chiefs - Grand Admiral Dr Erich Raeder until January 1943, then Admiral Donitz - and a handful of other high-ranking officers. Such was the nature of these meetings that even secretaries were excluded, and both Raeder and Donitz personally checked the typescripts of the meeting-notes before approving them. The conferences concerned either subjects upon which Hitler requested information or topics that the commanders-in-chief wanted to bring to the Fuehrer's attention. This is, therefore, an authentic and intimate account of the views of Axis high command upon naval strategy and its execution throughout the World War II, covering such key events as the invasion of Norway, the plans to invade Britain, the sinking of the Bismarck, and the Normandy landings. Indeed, Hitler's comments and decisions are noted throughout. The book has been read but remains in clean condition. All pages are intact and the cover is intact. Some minor wear to the spine.

Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. The Guns that Won the West tells the colourful story of the wide range of firearms - from the smallest pistol to the rifles of the buffalo hunters - used by plainsmen and settlers, gamblers and engineers, Native Americans and the soldiers of the United States Army. Meticulously researched by a foremost authority on firearms, this is an indispensable guide to the opening of the American West. John Walter examines pre-Civil War mass production and technical advances, and the effect of readily available post-war surplus weapons on life in the Midwest. He traces the swift expansion of the West, which led to a perpetual struggle against the Native Americans and brought the United States Army in its wake. John Walter also examines whether law was dispensed at the point of a gun and whether it was the Colt or the Winchester that reigned supreme at the OK Corral. Describing particular Western 'desperadoes' and the most popular Wild West firearms, he goes on to investigate how gun design influenced use and use influenced design. With detailed descriptions and performance evaluations of all the leading firearms, this book is an essential reference guide which cuts away the myth and legend and reveals the truth behind the guns, and the men who used them, in the heyday of the West. John Walter is a respected authority on all aspects of weaponry and is the author of The Luger Story and Rifles of the World. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition.
