Paperback. Zustand: Good. Over 125 Color & B/w Illustrations (illustrator). The question of how to build in historic city centres has increasingly troubled - and inspired - the architectural profession over the last 20 years. Stigmatized by the effects of five decades of modernist planning yet equipped with a fresh understanding and appreciation of tradition, architecture has reached what is arguably the most critical crossroads of the century. Architects around the world have begun to break out of the long period of self-imposed abstinence from contextual considerations, seeking ways by which to engage traditional and historic settings in meaningful dialogue and producing some of most engaging proposals in recent times. Differences abound, however, and raise questions concerning the exact nature of intervention. How far should historical precedents be taken as models? How are contemporary social and technological parameters incorporated in the new proposals? How should tradition and originality be understood? How can we retain traditional urban forms within the constraints of contemporary practice? What is the nature of the dialogue between architects and the people for whom they build? These and similar issues have been addressed by some of the world's foremost theorists and practitioners in the discussions of the Symposium here summarized, including Jacquelin Robertson, Maurice Culot, Demetri Porphyrios, Rob Krier and John Simpson. The book has been read but remains in clean condition. All pages are intact and the cover is intact. Some minor wear to the spine.

Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. Architecture today is moving at a faster pace than ever before. Many of the projects featured here reached us as proposals only a short while ago. The most recent progress of various architects is documented, including Peter Wilson, Gunter Behnisch, Philippe Starck, Zamp Kelp and Hani Rashid. Projects featured include Peter Wilson's house for David and Jancie Blackburn, which provides a visually and spatially supportive framework for their collection of contemporary furniture; Gunter Behnisch's whose recently completed Postal Museum, the latest in a series of 13 museums commissioned by the city of Frankfurt. New work by Philippe Starck finds a perfect outlet in Japan where it has captured the imagination of a wide range of corporate clients. And Christian Norburg-Schulz, in his article The New Tradition, asks if and how it is possible to derive an architecture that both reflects the dynamism of modernity and answers the need for a timeless built environment. Also included is an inside view of Carter Wiseman's recent book on IM Pei which conveys the controversy surrounding Pei's much-needed Louvre addition. The single spirit uniting writings and buildings is the persistent questioning of the direction that contemporary architecture is taking today. This profile, with its variety of answers, proves that pluralism is alive and leading to some of the best architecture for decades. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. This is an in-depth presentation of the Groningen project in Holland masterminded by Daniel Libeskind. Nine internationally renowned figures from a wide variety of disciplines were invited to design monumental tokens to be placed at the edge of the city. The resulting markers were rich in symbolism and imagination, with a theoretical diversity that could be expected from such a grouping. Among the participants were American historian of art and architecture Kurt Forster, German dramatist Heiner Muller, two visual artists, Thom Puckey from Holland and Leonhard Lapin from Estonia, two architects, American John Hejduck and Gunnar Daan from Holland. The product of enlightened patronage on the part of the citizens, politicians and bureaucrats of Groningen, the scheme set out to confront issues of urban identity on the occasion of the city's 950th anniversary. Containing a wealth of fascinating material both written and visual, this profile demonstrates the incredible vitality and ingenuity which lay behind this unique project. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. This issue of Architectural Design heralds a bold change in the style and format of the magazine. Improving its quality of reproduction and presentation, it now has an enlarged format and a new, innovative design. Modern pluralism has been sweeping the architectural world. Continuing its tradition of vigorously addressing the most important trends in architecture today, Architectural Design opens with an exploratory essay on this phenomenon by Geoffrey Broadbent, who attempts to discover just exactly what is going on. This is followed by a transcript of the Inaugural Lecture by Richard McCormac as President of the RIBA, in which he highlights the achievements of contemporary British architecture and discusses the way forward for the profession. Charles Jencks talks about the agenda of those architects currently practising new modernism; Peter Cook introduces his favourite architectural principles and practitioners; and Bernard Tschumi discusses the architecture of the event; the work of Arata Isozaki, Morphosis, Oma and James Stirling and Michael Wilford is featured in detail as well as an introduction to the work of Elizabeth Diller and Ricardo Scofidio. The additional, newly expanded magazine section maintains the high standard of content and design and includes a special extensive feature on the 1991 Venice Biennale as well as an interview with Norman Foster by Ken Powell, the Lucinda Lambton Diary - a new feature - and an article by Anthony Quiney on the medieval English village of Smarden; there is also a round-up of recent events, exhibitions and publications. Buch
Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. The last forty years have seen an outburst of theories and manifestoes which explore the possibilities of architecture: its language, evolution and social relevance. With the many crises in architecture and the obvious urban and ecological problems., Modernism has been criticised, questioned, overthrown, extended, subverted and revivified not a peaceful time for architectural thought and production. The result has been a cascade of new theories, justifications and recipes for building. This anthology, edited by the well-known historian and critic Charles Jencks, and the urbanist and theorist Karl Kropf, collects the main texts which define these changes. Essential for the student and practitioner alike, it presents over 120 of the key arguments of today's major architectural philosophers and gurus. These show that the Modern architecture of the early part of this century has mutated into three main traditions: a critical and ecological Post-Modernism; a High-Tech and sculptural Late Modernism; and a deconstructive, subversive New Modernism. Here are the seminal texts of James Stirling, Robert Venturi, Colin Rowe, Christopher Alexander, Frank Gehry, Reyner Banham, Bernard Tschumi, Rem Koolhaas and many others who have changed the discourse of architecture. Here also are the anti-Modern texts of the traditionalists Leon Krier, Demetri Porphyrios, Quinlan Terry, Prince Charles and others. Many of these texts are concise, edited varsions of influential books. Highly informative and richly illustrated with over forty drawings and photographs, this volume is a vital learning and teaching tool for all those interested in the philosophies of contemporary architecture. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. In the whole history of architecture there was never a period of such vitality, range of invention and generosity of spirit as that which followed the peace in 1918. With the foundation of the International Congress of Modern Architecture (CIAM) ten years later, this jolting energy was reduced to Le Corbusier's theory based on the technology of industrialised mass-production. At that moment a resistance movement against the CIAM developed. By examining the work of Hugo Haering, Hans Scharoun, Alvar Aallo, Gunnar Asplund, Giancarlo de Carlo, Aldo van Eyck, Eileen Gray, R.M. Schindler and Frank Lloyd Wright, Colin St John Wilson identifies this common strand of opposition to the CIAM movement and a body of work across the world which now demands proper recognition as the other tradition. He outlines the theoretical status of this tradition and uses case studies to compare and contrast a work of the other tradition with a work of the CIAM doctrine, highlighting the success of each project. Several example including Baker House, MIT (1948), the Philharmonic Berlin are measured against more orthodox modern buildings by Le Corbusier, and Walter Gropius and others. These comparisons illustrate how the works of the other tradition have gained greater credence and success in practice than the built projects of the CIAM. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. Incorporating material from the recent symposium on New Museology, organized by Academy Forum and the Royal Academy of Arts in London, this issue records the statements of over 40 international museum curators, architects, artists, collectors and critics, drawn into an open and unprecedented discussion on the role of modern and contemporary art museums and alternative exhibition spaces in the 1990s. Above all, the question is raised as to whether existing museum buildings can be adapted to accommodate new, often ephemeral artworks (installations, conceptual art, film, video, performance etc), or whether alternative spaces should be constructed, to meet the expections of both artists and viewers. Among those contributing to the issue are Hans Hollein, Daniel Libeskind, Thomas Krens, Achille Bonito Oliva, Giuseppe Panza, Hal Foster, Jean-Francois Lyotard and Joseph Kosuth. Visual material includes the Museum of Modern Art in Frankfurt by Hans Hollein, the Gwathemy Siegel extension to the Guggenheim in New York and OMA's design for Heinrich Klotz's Centre for Art and Media Technology in Karlsruhe. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. The classical revival in architecture began in earnest a decade ago. The first serious exhibition of Quinlan Terry's work marked the start of what was to become a crusade to remake British architecture. The Paternoster Square project, which forms the core of this issue, has brought together all key figures in the revival of architecture in Britain. In addition, as a result of the way in which commercial development was funded, it involved some of the leading American classicists - heirs to a tradition with its own complex history. If classicism in Britain has not entirely escaped from the old milieu of landed wealth and political conservatism, its connotations in the United States are very different. Thomas Beeby has been working towards a new civic style with his great library in Chicago - stylistically a blend of Chicago and New York motifs from the first decades of this century but at heart a big, rational building. The recent work and writings of key practising classical architects: Thomas Beeby, Allan Greenberg, John Simpson, Robert Adam, Quinlan Terry, Demetri Porphyrios and Paul Gibson are also included in this issue and exemplifies the central issue for classical architecture in Britain and America in the 1990s. The magazine section which accompanies this issue contains such features as The Lucinda Lambton Diary and Christopher Martin's Media Column. Also included is an extensive interview with Stuart Lipton by Maxwell Hutchinson which raises some intriguing and controversial points. There is an extensive extract from the Stadtfortum symposium in Berlin with contributions from Jacques Derrida and Kurt Forster. In addition there is a review and introduction from Michael Sorkin's latest book Exquisite Corpse. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.
