[William St Clair's proof copy] PROOF COPY. Octavo (22 x 14cm), pp.XIII; [1] blank; 210. Proof copy binding with Faber and Faber logo creating a pattern in red and black, black lettering, printed probable publication date of 22nd of February 1988 and probable price of £9.95 to front cover. Very minor toning to edges of textblock, William St Clair's corrective annotations throughout including page numbers and typographic changes. Fine. This uncorrected advance proof belonged to William St Clair, British historian and senior research fellow at the Institute of English Studies. Sir Stephen Harold Spender (CBE) was an English essayist, poet and novelist whose work primarily concentrated on themes of social injustice and the class struggle. The Temple is a semi-autobiographical novel (also sometimes labelled as a bildungsroman) which explores first love and youth. This story was inspired by Spender's summer vacation in Germany.
