Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. How can Christians today truthfully recite the creed, identify themselves with it personally, and understand what they are saying? To produce this clear and positive guide, three priests responsible for training in French dioceses worked together over three years. Phrase by phrase, article by article, they show what Christians have believed and can believe by the creed. Like the creed itself, they limit themselves to the essentials, and they write for all those who want to believe and understand the faith that they proclaim in church Sunday by Sunday. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. Reimagining Ministry is a response to growing dissatisfaction with existing models of ministry. David Heywood diagnoses the problems of our traditional understanding and proposes a new model that embraces both the ministry of the whole Church and of the ordained within it. He places mission at the heart of the Church's life, explaining the way in which the Church's understanding of mission has developed over the past generation and showing how the shape of the Church and its ministry grow out of the mission of God. Reimaging Ministry is an intensely practical book, drawing on concrete examples, placing these within a well-argued biblical and theological framework and making proposals for the future of ministry. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. Many people have written books about the Bible from feminist and black points of view, but prior to this exceptional book no one has interpreted the Bible from the perspective of blindness. When John Hull went blind he realised that the Bible was written by sighted people. Even Jesus shared in the attitudes of his day towards blindness. In writing the book, Hull ignored the printed text and listened to the Bible on tape. The result is a unique interpretation, which challenges the sighted monopoly yet brings new insights into the Bible for both sighted and blind. Examining some of the best known instances of blindness in the biblical stories, the author brings anecdotes from his own life and experience to bear on thesa. What emerges is that the image of God is stamped upon blindness since only blind people can say that they, like God, are beyond light and darkness. In the Beginning There was Darkness affords new perspectives to all who are unaware that they read the Bible from a sighted point of view and will draw the different worlds of sight and blindness into a deeper mutual understanding. A gripping testament to courage and faith, it makes a powerful contribution to burgeoning interest in theologies of disability and offers one of the most sinking fusions of the biblical and the personal yet to have appeared in print. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. A Spoke in the Wheel is an ideal book to introduce Dietrich Bonhoeffer to a new generation of readers. Vividly and concisely written, critical as well as appreciative, and containing material which has not been published in English before, it paints an unforgettable portrait of the great German theologian hanged by the Nazis in 1945. What emerges most clearly is the complexity of Bonhoeffer's personality and the lonely course he pursued: sensitive, but taught always to repress his feelings; moving away from his family to read theology, but not feeling at home in his church; ready to sacrifice everything but dogged by a tendency towards narcissism; finding the woman he loved and at that very moment put in a prison from which he would never emerge. Above all, Renate Wind brings out Bonhoeffer's early realization of the horror of Nazi treatment of the Jews and the bravery of his involvement in the resistance against Hitler, his resolve to become a 'spoke in the wheel'. To their shame, many in the churches never forgave Dietrich Bonhoeffer this involvement, and in also calling attention to their failing, this book helps to explain why. Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. Although, there appears to have been no critical responses so far, the report on Mission-Shaped Churches is being used all over England in the training of people for public ministry. Here, for the first time, is a serious theological evaluation of the framework within which this policy document is presented. John Hull's response to the report raises hugely important questions about the concepts of Kingdom, Church, Gospel and Mission, concepts that are not distinguished clearly, consistently or acceptably in the report. He looks in particular to the consequences this has on the treatment given to issues surrounding poverty, consumerism, pluralism in faith and community. Whilst the author shares the hopes for a renewal of the church, most strongly, and is an avid supporter of the fresh expression of churches, he raises critical questions about the way we go about creating cell churches and cafe churches. He also raises questions about the inherent territorialism, and possible ignorance of realistic situations of poverty or multi-faith communities that the Church may harbour. Although, the report may look for a mission-shaped church what it finds and seems to want to recreate is a church-shaped mission. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Paperback. Zustand: Good. In this memorable, haunting book Frank Wright, well known for his writing and work in the area of pastoral care, explores the nature of the neglected subject of goodness from a background of modern literature and philosophy as well as theology, and indicates different lines on which it may be nurtured. For years, he points out, there has been a deafening silence on the subject of goodness even in theological and church life. Evil is so prevalent and pervasive, so relentlessly portrayed in the media, that the possibility and attraction of goodness is clouded over. Yet it is there, and as we begin to look at what makes us call people 'good', we are led beyond them to that which is beyond themselves, to God. What Frank Wright offers is an exploration and an invitation: gentle, sensitive, perceptive. It is also in its quiet way a challenge -and one that is difficult to forget. Frank Wright is a Canon Emeritus of Manchester Cathedral. The book has been read but remains in clean condition. All pages are intact and the cover is intact. Some minor wear to the spine.

Paperback. Zustand: Good. Much has already been written on AIDS, moving accounts by those affected by it, case studies and books on pastoral care. Comparatively little, however, has been written about the implications of AIDS for theology, and these are important and far-reaching. How does AIDS affect our picture of God? How are the teachings of the Bible to be used authoritatively in the face of AIDS? Is the church hampered in its reactions to AIDS because down the ages it has failed to develop a viable sexual ethic? How do the theological marks of the church, its holiness and catholicity, relate to the attitudes of its members to those with AIDS? All these questions, and many others, are discussed with compassion and insight in this new study. The author writes from Africa, where AIDS is rampant, and he has been to see AIDS agencies in Uganda, Tanzania and Zimbabwe as well as South Africa, where he lives. He has also been to the United States and Great Britain, where he has gained similar experience. However, the striking feature of his book is the clarity of his approach to the difficult theological and religious questions. While exploring these issues and commenting on attitudes which differ from*his own, he makes sure that his arguments are grounded in the realities by interspersing the discussion with brief cameos introducing people living with AIDS and those who work with them. There are chapters on AIDS and our picture of God, AIDS and the Bible, AIDS and sexual ethics, AIDS and the church, AIDS and being human and AIDS and women, together with a comprehensive bibliography. Ronald Nicolson is Professor in Religious Studies in the University of Natal, Pietermaritzburg, South Africa. The book has been read but remains in clean condition. All pages are intact and the cover is intact. Some minor wear to the spine.

Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. Briefly: Hume's Dialogues is a summarized version of David Hume's Dialogues Concerning Natural Religion, which is designed to assist university and sixth-form students in acquiring knowledge and understanding of this key text in the Philosophy of Religion. Based on, and page referenced to, Popkin's Hackett edition of the Dialogues, an important feature of the book is its close adherence to Hume's text, enabling the reader to follow each development in the argument as it occurs. It will be of particular value in helping students to revise for university examinations in Philosophy and Theology (the Dialogues is a popular set text in both subjects) and for A-level examinations in Religious Studies. The introduction contains a brief biography of Hume, examines and assesses the importance of the main issues covered by the Dialogues, and indicates where they are to be found in the text. There is a comprehensive glossary of terms. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. One of the most perceptive and entertaining of writers, Trevor Beeson, takes us on a fascinating and amusing journey through the Church of England in the last fifty years. From the publication of Honest to God and to the ordination of women and rows over sexuality, it has been an extraordinary time, with its moments of exhilaration and absurdity. We travel a decade a time, taking in the Swinging Sixties and the Gay Nineties, enjoying an overview of both momentous change and obscure events in the Church, on the international stage and at a local level. In the Thatcher years, when the Church was the government's most effective opposition, what foolish or trivial things were exciting the minds of local preachers and editors of parish magazines? This wonderful book embraces both. Each section comprises 50 vignettes that capture the spirit of the age in which they were written. Here is an attractive mix of history, theology, biography, quirkiness and sheer fun. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. Theology is not a subject especially noted for its jokes (though one of the chapters in this book has a good collection of them). However, since laughter is such an important element in life, there would be something wrong if it could not be heard in theology: not mocking laughter, but the laughter which indicates delight and joy. And that such laughter cannot be heard today in the Roman Catholic church in its 'wintry season' is an important indication of its problems. Dr Kuschel traces a fascinating story of laughter: from Sarah in the Hebrew Bible through Homer, Plato and Aristotle, Mozart and Kafka, to Umberto Eco and The Name of the Rose. There is a long chapter on Christian laughter and its foundations in the New Testament and there is a discussion of the Christian condemnation of laughter, among the church fathers and the monastic tradition. And sometimes laughter is out of place - a lesson which our modern world has not really learned. Jesus, from whom Christianity arose, was laughed at; and his followers have known what it is to be laughed at too. That recognition, too, is vital; one more strand in what proves to be the rich vein of new theological insights offered here. `How much underlies laughter! This is the kind of theology that we need: the world in all its heights and depths, everything clearly thought through, brilliantly written and at the same time centred on the Christian message' (Hans Kung). Karl-Josef Kuschel teaches ecumenical theology and theological aesthetics in the University of Tubingen. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. Teilhard de Chardin (1881-1955) was a French Jesuit theologian and scientist renowned for his pioneering field work in paleontology and human origins. His visionary writings on the reconciliation of faith and evolutionary theory aroused the suspicions of the Vatican and he was forbidden to publish on religious matters during his lifetime. After his death, the publication of his many books marked him as one of the most influential Catholic thinkers of this century. As Ursula King shows, Teilhard's personal spirituality consisted in seeing all things in Christ, and Christ in all things. This holistic vision was the underlying key to his life and thought. In successive chapters King goes on to show how many contemporary theological discussions - concerning the sources of Christian spirituality, the role of mysticism, the dialogue among faiths, the voices of women, the debates about environmental issues, the transformation of Christianity in a postmodern world, and the dialogue between faith and science - were prefigured in Teilhard's work. Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. Do you envy the suicide bombers their firm faith in life after death? Probably not: you think they are deluded. People in the west have quite recently lost all their old ideas about a Better World Hereafter. We now accept that we are already in the Last World, the world with no further reality beyond it, and that we'd better live our life to the full while we have it. If so, then what happens to the traditional problem of Christian origins? Jesus preached the arrival of the Last World, and urged us to begin a new 'solar' kind of living. His message was one of secular fulfilment. But the Apostolic Faith, by raising him to the supernatural world, took us all a whole dispensation back, to the Penultimate World, a world dominated by supernatural fears and hopes, a world of watching and waiting under strict discipline. The new era announced by Jesus was thus aborted, probably during the late 40s. But today we need, not the New Testament message, but a Last Testament for the Last World, which is our world. Don Cupitt attempts some midwifery. It is time for the faith to be born properly, and to become public property, not a clerical monopoly. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. This book is one of a series of supplementary volumes published alongside the Jerusalem Bible in France and intended to provide a general introduction to the world in which the Bible is set; the series includes such famous titles as Jeremias' Jerusalem in the time of Jesus and de Vaux's Ancient Israel. It is an exhaustive study of the legal and sociological background of texts dealing with social justice, first in Mesopotamia and Egypt, and then in pre-exilic Israel. The author is a specialist in modern ethics, but has made himself thoroughly familiar with the relevant secondary literature. The book also contains an excellent bibliography on social ethics in ancient Israel and its environment, and a valuable historical survey of the development of scholarly study in this field, up to and including recent Marxist interpretations. The orientation of the book is basically sociological, which makes it a valuable corrective to an excessively theological view of biblical ethics, and anchors the ethical teaching of the biblical writers firmly in social reality. Why Israel should be the society where a call for social justice should be expressed so keenly in law and prophets is a fascinating historical and sociological question, and the author's answer is interesting and controversial. Welcoming the French edition in the Journal of Jewish Studies, John Barton said that an English edition would be invaluable as a student textbook in a surprisingly neglected field. Here it is. Paperback. Zustand: Fair. Don Cupitt argues that our age has recently become post-Christian and post-philosophical. Uncertain what to make of the new situation, people are becoming highly disorientated. Will either philosophy or theology ever be able to focus our culture around a coherent, rational and commonly-acknowledged view of life? By way of an answer, Don Cupitt offers a reinvention of metaphysics. He aims to reconcile the scientific vision of the world, which brings everything down to a motion of tiny packets of energy, with the 'arts' vision that reduces everything to a movement of cultural signs. He argues that an anti-realist interpretation of the scientific world-picture both does full justice to the cultural importance of science and opens up new religious possibilities. After the church comes the kingdom: this may be the first textbook of post-Christianity, describing a time of fulfilment when religion can at last become completely sensuous, rational and this-worldly. A readable copy of the book which may include some defects such as highlighting and notes. Cover and pages may be creased and show discolouration.

Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. This is the second of three volumes on the history of Christianity in England from Roman times to the Reformation. It covers the period from the Norman Conquest to the death of John Wycliffe. Although there has been much scholarly work in the last fifty years on Christianity in England during these crucial and most interesting centuries, this has mostly concentrated on specific and fairly circumscribed topics or quite narrow spans of time. There has been a paucity of works which attempt to describe and comment on the changing fortunes of Christianity in England in this mediaeval period as a whole; and none which takes account of recent scholarly work up to the end of the twentieth century. This is an opportune moment to fill a gap, and to provide a comprehensive and analytical overview of a pivotal age for the development of Christianity in England, which will be attractive and useful to students of history and theology, and also to clergy, ministers, and a much wider readership. KENNETH HYLSON-SMITH was until his recent retirement Bursar and Fellow of St Cross College, Oxford. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition.
