Buchbeschreibung Cloth with dustjacket. Zustand: Gut. X, 387 p. Aus der Bibliothek von Prof. Wolfgang Haase, langjährigem Herausgeber der ANRW und des International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT) / From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Schutzumschlag berieben, minimale Randläsuren, sonst guter Zustand und innen sauber / dust jacket rubbed, minimal edgewear, otherwise good condition and internally clean. - This book, representing the first comprehensive analysis of Thomas Hooker's entire literary canon, will be received eagerly by scholars and students in early American literature, early American history, and church history. It will serve both as useful instruction to those who do not know Hooker's work at first hand, and as edifying analysis for those who do. Thomas Hooker has long been recognized as one of the key leaders among the first- generation New England colonists. Biographers and church historians have firmly established his importance as founder of the churches and communities of Cambridge, Massachusetts and Hartford, Connecticut, and as a prominent definer and defender of early Congregationalism. His preeminence as a preacher has become a common assumption in early American studies. Despite this, many of his writings have remained unknown while others have been studied in isolation. This new study examines the entire Hooker canon in both the Old World and the New. Sargent Bush, Jr. examines Hooker's writings against the background of their sources in the external world of political, intellectual, and ecclesiastical turmoil in the early seventeenth century and in the light of their origins in Hooker's own sensitivity to the psychological and spiritual needs of his congregations. Hooker's leadership was fully as much spiritual as political. His power to lead in both the temporal and spiritual worlds derived chiefly from his command of language. The nature of this command is the primary concern of this study. Part One of this work examines those writings in Hooker's canon that were direct responses to particular events or conditions in the temporal world in which he lived. These "occasional writings" include the famous definition of Congregational polity, A Survey of the Summe of Church Discipline, and his less well-known but masterful jeremiads written in response to conditions in the English Church in the 1620s. Other works discussed at length in this section include writings on the antinomian controversy and the ongoing debate about baptism practices, two issues which made a lasting imprint on life in seventeenth-century New England and on which Hooker had more to say than has been appreciated. Parts Two and Three deal with a still more important achievement of Hooker's career: his opus on the psychology of redemption. Although published in many fragmentary volumes of various sizes, this long series of sermons on the sinner's journey to grace takes on its proper dimensions as a monumental work of both practical theology and literary imagination when examined in toto. Hooker's description of the soul's pilgrimage from degradation to glory emerges as an epic-scale narrative of great power. This systematic and comprehensive approach to Hooker's writings brings clearly into focus his impressive gifts as a writer and speaker, helping all readers to a new and fuller appreciation both of Hooker and the literary, historic, and religious climate of his age. / Contents Acknowledgments Introduction Chapter 1.
