But under this macerated form was concealed a mind replete with feience, burning with a zeal of be nefitin g his fellow-creatures, and filled with an honed confcious pride, mixed with a {corn of doing, or {uttering the lead thing beneath the dignityof a phi Iofopher. Accordingly he had a foul that would not let him accept of any offers of charity, at the fame time that his body feemed but too much to require it. His lodging was in a finall chamber up four pair of fiairs, where he regularly paid for what he had when he ate or drank; and he was often obfer -ved wholly to abllain from both. He declined fpeakin g to any one, except the (lucen, or her hilt minif'ter, to whom he attempted to make {ome ap plications; but his real bulinefs or intentions were at erly unknown to all men. Thes much is certain, that he was obnoxious to the (heen's miniftry; who, either out ofjealonfy or envy, had him fpirited away, and carried abroad as a dangerous perfon, without any regard to the known laws of the kingdom.
