Or, Covenants with Mankind, Represented. Indianapolis: Liberty Fund, [2002]. xix, 246 pp. Reprinted The Legal Classics Library, 2020. This attempt to seek a "conciliation" between the confessions complements the concept of toleration discussed in Of the Nature and Qualification of Religion in Reference to Civil Society. Samuel Pufendorf (1632-1694) taught natural law and was court historian in both Germany and Sweden. (Publisher's description).

Aus der Bibliothek von Prof. Wolfgang Haase, langjährigem Herausgeber der ANRW und des International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT) / From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - sehr guter Zustand / very good condition - In The Whole Duty of Man (1691), first published in Latin in 1673 as De officio hominis etcivis, Pufendorf elaborates his conception of ethics, which separates civil duties from religious hopes. Unlike many Christian political theologians of the seventeenth century, Pufendorf refused to ground his natural law ethics in the ideal of human perfection or holiness; rather, he grounded them in the need for sociability, which he regarded as simply a means to an end - that is, human self-preservation and civil peace. Like Grotius and Hobbes, Pufendorf was responding to the religious wars that wracked early modern Europe by constructing a version of natural law capable of defending the civil state against the religious and moral delegitimation wielded by international Catholicism and Protestant zealots. -- Born in Saxony in 1632, the son of a Lutheran pastor, Pufendorf was among the first to suggest a purely conventional basis for natural law, and, according to Ian Hunter and David Saunders, "Pufendorf occupies the same rank in the history of European culture as Hobbes, Locke, Rousseau, and Kant." This edition of The Whole Duty of Man also includes the first translation into English of three essays by the famous eighteenth-century Pufendorf commentator and translator Jean Barbeyrac. These essays, which consist of Barbeyrac's commentary on Leibniz's criticism of the De officio, in addition to two of his own discourses on the relation between natural and civil law, "offer a unique insight into the motives governing the reception of the De officio into the Huguenot and English contexts." -- The separation of civil governance and religious worship is the basis for Pufen-dorf's unique theory of a strong state committed to private religious freedoms. Although this new idea was, write Hunter and Saunders, "responsible for the work's controversial nature," it was also well suited to reviving a beleaguered Europe that was emerging from years of bitter religious civil strife. - sehr guter Zustand / very good condition - The appearance in 1660 of Samuel Pufendorf's earliest work, Two Books of the Elements of Universal Jurisprudence, inaugurated the modern natural-law movement in the German-speaking world. It also established Pufendorf as a major figure in natural law and laid the foundation for his later works, which were to sweep across Europe and North America. -- The Elements presents a "geometric" system of natural law. Book one is divided into definitions of basic moral and legal concepts and into principles, both rational and experimental, from which propositions about specific matters and their relations are derived by syllogism. Book two is concerned with formal requirements of morality and with the material content of natural law, such as liberty of the will and the natural sociability of man. Pufendorf also discusses international law, in particular freedom of the seas, a topic of pressing interest to his contemporaries. He bases his arguments for limits to the state's role in human life upon principles of public policy, in contrast to rights-based theories, which consider natural rights as liberties and political government as justified by its protection of such rights. -- The Liberty Fund edition is a revised and corrected edition of William Abbott Old-father's translation from 1931. Technical terms have been standardized to their proper English equivalents, and new annotations identify allusions and references. A bibliography provides modern editions of sources referred to in the text. Editor Thomas Behme notes that the Elements "offers a compact and readable introduction to Pufendorfs legal and political thought. -- Born in Saxony, Samuel Pufendorf (1632- 1694) held the first professorship in the Protestant world dedicated to natural law, at the University of Heidelberg. He spent much of his career (1670-88) in the sendee of the Swedish king, first as professor of the law of nature and nations at the new University of Lund, then as privy councilor, secretary of state, and royal historiographer. He ended his career as privy councilor and royal historiographer to the king of Prussia (1688-94). He was one °f the most important philosophical lawyers, historians, and theorists of the constitution of state and church in the early-modern period.
